Thirteen people die each day while waiting for an organ. If everyone became an organ donor, there would be enough organs for every person who needed one. It’s free, it’s easy and it’s the last greatest gift you’ll ever give.

Step 1
Your first step is to visit the main Organ Donor website: http://organdonor.gov/. Once there, your next step is to click on the menu choice at the top of the screen that reads: “Be A Donor.”

Step 2
There you will see a link directing you to how to sign up for the organ donor registry in your particular state. When you click on that link, you will be taken to a list of the fifty states in the U.S. Click on your state to be directed to your state’s organ donor registry and the directions you will need to follow. (Many states allow you to sign up for organ donation when you renew your license at your local Department of Motor Vehicles.) Alternatively, in many states you can fill out an organ donor card.

Step 3
It’s important to tell your loved ones of your decision to become an organ donor and to let them know that you feel strongly about this. Let them know that you have indicated as much on your license (or have gotten an organ donor card that you carry with you). This way, if something ever were to happen, they could provide the medical officials with your donor card or license indicating that it is your wish to donate your organs.

Step 4
If you have questions about what your religion says about organ donation, click on the link at the top of the site that says “Donation Basics” Then click on the link that says “Religious Views on Donation.” There you will find what many different religions state on the subject of organ donation.
